Scottish Schools Cups 2021-22
This season’s Scottish Schools’ Cups are now underway, with at least one match played in most competitions. A record number of 95 teams are playing across all eight schools’ competitions this season.
Early Results
George Watson’s College were first into action. Their girls beat St Columba’s School 5-0 in their Senior Cup first-round tie to set up a meeting with Glasgow Academy or Dollar Academy. And their Senior boys won 2-1 at Strathallan in a thrilling match. Rhett Halkett, Strathallan’s Head of Hockey, commented, “It was a really good game and a nice advert for Scottish schoolboys’ hockey.”
In the Junior Cups, Dollar Academy had a big win over Glenalmond in Round 1 of the Girls’ Cup; and Kelvinside Academy eased past Wellington School on their trip to Ayrshire in the new Challenge Cup. George Watson’s College have also played their first-round matches in the Junior Cups; their boys beat Loretto 3-0 and will play Strathallan in Round 2; and their girls defeated Morrison’s Academy in Crieff.
Cup Format
All Cups are played on a knock-out basis, with losers in the early rounds competing in Plate competitions, so that all schools play a minimum of two matches. There are separate competitions for boys and girls: Senior Cups for S4-S6 players; and Junior Cups for S3 and younger. This season, the top-16 Girls’ teams in both age groups (based on the past few seasons) are playing in the Cups; and all other teams are competing for Challenge Cups. The Boys only have one Senior and one Junior Cup due to having less teams.
This season’s finals will be held at Peffermill on Friday 11 March (Junior) and Friday 18 March (Senior).
The Aspire Cup qualifying tournaments (boys and girls) will be held on 27 October in Glenalmond; and 5 November at Peffermill, Edinburgh. These are for schools who are at earlier stages of their hockey programmes. The top teams qualify for finals day.

George Thornton, Competitions & Events Manager (Youth), is delighted to see the return of these Cups; “The last hockey matches played in Scotland before lockdown were the Schools Cup Finals in Glasgow on 13 March 2019. Now, more than 18 months later, these very popular competitions are finally back! 28 teams across all competitions will join us on the Finals Days in March to compete for the silverware, including the two new Girls’ Challenge Cups. Good luck to all teams.”
