Some high scores, a few shoot-outs, and a big result or two in the Scottish Cup quarter finals

In the women’s cup Edinburgh University third string have done extremely well to make it to the quarter-final stages but were no match for Premiership leaders Watsonians and went down 8-0. For Watsonians there were two goals each for Katie Stott and Milly Berndes-Cade while the others came from Ailsa Small, Sarah Robertson, Beth Dodds and finally Katherine Holdgate.

However, Edinburgh University`s top side, who are second in the Premiership, had a difficult job disposing of a Glasgow University side that are in the lower echelons of the table. The sides finished 1-1 in normal time, Eve Pearson scoring for Edinburgh, however Edinburgh then went on to enter the semi-final draw after winning the shoot-out 3-0.

Wildcats were comfortable 3-0 winners over second tier Edinburgh Hockey Club at Auchenhowie. New mid-season signing Lexi Sabatelli fired the ball into the net at a penalty corner and before the break Lucy Mcmillan added a second to effectively kill off the tie. Edinburgh came more into the contest in the second half but any whiff of a comeback was stifled by a powerful run and shot by Emma McDiarmid.

It was predicted that the clash between the Glasgow rivals GHK and Hillhead would be a close affair and so it proved as the tie ended 1-1 in normal time. After a goalless first half, Mackenzie Brown put GHK in front at a penalty corner but not long after Wendy Andrews equalised for Hillhead – and so to a penalty shoot-out.

So what were the highlights – well Emma Blackstock, Mhairi Low and Wendy Andrews scored for Hillhead, Carly Bisset and Kirsty Wicklow replied for GHK, and Hillhead keeper Lucy Harris saved three of GHK`s efforts – the result Hillhead won 3-2 and moved into the next round.

Holders Western Wildcats powered their way into the semi-final of the men’s Scottish Cup yesterday with a 16-2 win over Inverleith. Top scorer was Fraser Moran with four and there were doubles each for Andrew McConnell, Rob Harwood, Adam Mackenzie, Jack Mackenzie, Jonny Christie and teenager Luc Hermsen. Kyle Taylor and Charlie Jack got the Edinburgh side`s consolations.

Not such good news for Kelburne, they travelled to Dundee to face second division leaders Grove Menzieshill and were eliminated from the competition. The Taysiders went into a two goal lead through Paul Martin and Cameron McDonald but the upset had to wait as two strikes by Jay Berry levelled the tie at 2-2, however Grove Menzieshill went on to win the shoot-out 4-2 and progress into the semi-final draw.

Grange just shaded the tie of the round against Edinburgh University at Peffermill 2-0. The first half was goalless but Dylan Bean struck for the Premiership leaders just after the interval. The tie was sealed early in the fourth quarter with an open play strike from Rory McCann to ensure it was Grange who progressed.

In the final men`s tie ESM defied their lowly league placing with a 3-2 win over last year`s finalists Hillhead. A poor tackle on Jack Adams in the circle allowed Jack Collister to open ESM`s account from the spot. Not long after a fluffed shot from the top of the circle by Tom Kemsley levelled for a 1-1 half-time score. A penalty corner conversion by Rich Wright put the Edinburgh side 2-1 up but again Hillhead replied when Yan Adams sunk a penalty corner rebound.

The winner emerged from another poor tackle on Rich McCorkell and for the second time in the match Collister scored from the spot to put ESM in the semi-final draw.
