U21 Men draw 1-1 against Malaysia

Scotland`s under-21 team certainly punched above their weight with a 1-1 draw against Malaysia in the first test match at Clydesdale this evening, and they could have won but for an equaliser in the closing minutes. A good result against a side that are ranked 11th in the world and are heading for the Junior World Cup in India next month.

The first quarter belonged to the Scots with three penalty corner opportunities which unfortunately came to nothing, but the visitors failed to pose any real threat.

The Scots youngsters took the lead in the second quarter with a direct drag flick from Wildcats` Fraser Moran, and that is how it stood at the interval.

The Scots should have put the game to bed after the interval, firstly Jamie Golden missed from the spot, and then Moran put a great chance wide of the target, and there were four or five other opportunities to score.

Towards the end Ali Douglas had a good shot and there were two other penalty corner chances, but in the final minutes Malaysia scored for an undeserved share of the spoils.

Scotland coach Graham Moodie said: “I was really pleased with the performance of the squad playing against a high-level team, there were lots of positives and a good lesson going into the second game.”
