Uddingston lose out to French side
Uddingston Hockey Club lost out 6-2 in their opening game against French Division 1 side Le Touquet Athletic HC in Athens.
The opening encounters were very much in the middle of the park as both sides looked to take control of the match. The first clear chance fell to the French side after they were awarded a short corner. They failed to take the lead after a fine save from Uddingston goalkeeper Craig Wallace.
Uddingston reacted and a quick move from Laurie Mckelvie put through Martyn Connor who drove in to the D to win a corner. McKelvie’s drag flick was saved by the French keeper to deny the visitors.
The first half continued to go from end to end as both sides probed for the lead. Le Touquet were awarded a short corner with five minutes to go in the first half which again was saved by Wallace but Uddingston failed to clear the rebound and the second shot opened the scoring.
Le Touquet took the initiative in the early encounters of the second half as they pressed Uddingston and as they failed to deal with some quick passing, the French side extended their lead . Uddingston reacted well and a driving run by Andrew Mcarthur crossed for Steven Percy to keep Uddingston in the game with a reaction shot.
This was the catalyst for the French side as the dominated the next encounters. A combination of great attacking play by Le Touquet allowed them to add three to their total before Uddingston replied.
Martin Lorimer drove the baseline and his cross broke to Steven Percy who shot high in to the net.
Le Touquet added one more to their total to finish the game 6-2.
Uddingston face Russian side St Petersburg tomorrow.
