East come out on top in the Under 14 Girls Notts Inter-District Tournament

The Under 14 Girls Notts Sport Inter-District took place at Glasgow National Hockey Centre over the course of this weekend with lots of goals and strong competition from all teams.

Pool A opened the tournament with West vs Midlands district. Ellie Ritchie scored in the opening 6th minute from open play, starting West of very comfortably. Midlands fought hard to get a goal back however, this just did not prove possible with the game finishing 1-0 to West.

The second match in Pool A saw East taking on the Hybrid team. Scoring opened in the 3rd minute with a goal from Lucy Holligan. A minute before half time, East managed to score their second game of the match with a penalty corner from Izzie Usher. A further goal from Ava Allan meant East were 3-0 up going into half time. They came out determined not to let their level of play slip and this was proven with another goal, this time from Louise McGuire, meaning the end score was 4-0 to East.

Pool B games opened with wins for South West and North district. South West came out strong and scored the opening and only goal of the game, with Leigh Timothy claiming the goals. It was end to end for the remainder of the game but neither sides could convert their chances.

Over on Pitch 1, North got the game underway, with Alex Bayne scoring in the 8th minute. The play remained relatively level with just back and forth play. However, 5 minutes from full time, there came a flurry of goals. Ailsa Phimster scoring for North after a scramble inside the D following a great save by Highland keeper Heather Gordon. 2 minutes later, North scored again through Ava Airnes. On the brink of full time Highland pulled one back with a goal from Heather Maciver. The end score to this game was 3-1 to North.

Next up from Pool A was East versus Midland district. East were off to a flying start and were 2-0 up by half time with both goals scored by Izzy Usher. The second half continued with chances for both sides but the full-time score remained at 2-0 for East.

West took on the Hybrid team and scored inside the first 3 minutes. The first goal came from Caterina Nelli and was quickly followed up by Sophie MacKellar, taking the score to 2-0 to West. MacKellar struck again in the 12th minute scoring through a well worked penalty corner. The second half commenced with another 2 goals from Sophie MacKeller, taking the final score to 5-0 to West.

South district won their first game of the day, beating Highland 3-0. The teams were level at half time but shortly after the break, Jessica Wright broke the deadlock. Mackenzie Crick then continued the lead for South. The score was sealed for South when Captain Jessica Wright scored again, taking the final score to 3-0 over Highland.

An action-packed game between North and South West district saw South West taking the points. The game was level until the 22nd minute when Leigh Timothy scored through a penalty corner. 2 minutes later, Leigh Timothy added another to her tally for the day, completing the score for a 2-0 win.

The battle to finish top of Pool A was between the rival district, West and East. The game was an even battle throughout with both teams having a fair share of attempts on goal. A penalty corner leading to a top D strike from Sophie MacKellar was enough for West district to take all 3 points and finish top of the group.

Midland played Hybrid in their last game of the pool and went 1-0 up in 10th minute with Abi Moffat scoring a cracker of a goal. Shortly after half time, a goal from Riley Thomson gave Midland their first win of the day. This saw the game end in a 2-0 win for Midlands.

The final games of Pool B saw South West win against Highland 3-0. A goal in the 2nd minute came from Leigh Timothy, with Annie Lonergan and Abbie Allan adding to the tally through penalty corners. South beat North in a close 1-0 match. The only goal of the game came right at the start from Jessica Wright. South West finished top of Pool B having won all 3 of their games.

The semi-finals got underway with West playing South and South West playing East. West dominated their game scoring 4 goals against South. These goals came from Sophie MacKellar, Ava Wadsworth and scoring twice, Caterina Nelli. South fought hard but couldn’t convert their chances.

South West were unlucky not to take their chances, losing out 3-0 to East. Izzy Usher scored in the opening minute for East, with Eliza Tetley and Ava Allan also adding to their tally.

The play off position for 7/8th was contested between Hybrid and Highland. Hybrid ran away the winners with a total of 5 goals. Goals from Olivia Criaud, Mhairi Low, Florence Press, Ava Gilmurray and Sophie Macrae. Both teams showcased some brilliant hockey.

For 5/6th position Midland took on North. Midland were the winners scoring 4 goals, Gemma Smith, Riley Thomson, Abi Moffat and Paige Stevens claiming the goals. North were unable to add to the score sheet but produced some fine efforts nevertheless.

3/4th place was hotly contested by South and South West. South West emerged victorious in a 3-0 win, the opening goal came from Sofia Burnham. Just after half time, Leigh Timothy added to the goal scoring with Abbie Allan finishing off the game with a fantastic strike finishing the game on a 3-0 win.

West met East in the final which did not disappoint.  West opened the scoring with a superb reverse shot from Sophie MacKellar. A few minutes later, East were level through Poppy Flockhart’s effort. On the brink of half time, Flockhart struck again taking East into the lead. West had some fantastic efforts but they were well defended by East. Izzy Usher sealed the deal for East with a final goal. Making the final score 3-1 in favour of the East.
