Watsonians and Grange still in charge at the top of the Premierships

Grange comfortably held on to pole position in the men`s Premiership after seeing off bottom side FMGM Monarchs 5-2 on Tayside. Joe Waterston and Fraser Heigh put the Edinburgh side two up before Ross Glashan pulled one back at a penalty corner just before the interval. Duncan Riddell, Heigh again and Aussie Dylan Bean added three more to the Grange tally in the second half before Glashan scored again for Monarchs.

Grange manager Martin Shepherdson said at the end of the game: “Their keeper made a lot of good saves and we wasted a lot of chances which was our own fault, but we were always in control.”

Grange still remain a point ahead of champions Western Wildcats despite their twelve goal mauling of Kelburne. The league`s top scorer Andrew McConnell was again on target with another five to add to his impressive tally while there were two each for Jack Mackenzie, Rob Harwood, Fraser Moran and Jonny Christie got the other.

Edinburgh University have fallen four points behind Grange after being held to a 2-2 draw by capital neighbours Watsonians. Player/coach Hamish Imrie and Tom Cahalin scored for the students but Dan Coultas at a penalty corner and under-18 international Drew Lobb replied for Watsonians.

A good result for Watsonians but they still drop down to fifth in the table overtaken by Clydesdale who were 5-3 winners over Dunfermline Carnegie at Titwood. The home side galloped into a four goal lead through Anthony Small, Andy McAllan twice and David Clark before the Fifers replied with goals from Andrew Doyle, Gary Clark and Archie Stephen to reduce the score to 4-3. However a late strike from Andrew Allan secured the three points for Clydesdale and fourth place.

It is a close contest between Inverleith and Hillhead for sixth position in the table, the Edinburgh side just edge it on goal difference after beating ESM 4-1. A double from Ollie Wilson and singles by Derek Salmond and Livio Belotti gave Inverleith a commanding 4-0 lead before Callum Grant got ESM`s consolation.

Hillhead were also on form with a 7-0 win over Uddingston in what coach Yan Adams said was “finally hitting stride”. John Reid was top scorer with a hat-trick of far post tap-ins, Matt Carder got two and the others came from Andrew Sinclair and Andrew Black.

The highlight of the women`s Premiership was GHK`s 1-0 win over Clydesdale Western, a result that puts them on the same points as Clydesdale but with an inferior goal difference. Certainly a breakthrough for GHK whose winner came in the second quarter with a rebound strike by Connie Lathe. GHK are now well established in fifth spot with a four point advantage over Hillhead and must now be looking to progress further up the table.

On the other side Clydesdale`s coach Derek Forsyth said: “We had lots of possession but couldn`t take our chances.”

Watsonians certainly took their chances with an 11-0 win over bottom side Dundee Wanderers, Scotland striker Sarah Jamieson got four, Milly Berndes-Cade two while the other came from Bex Jones, Katie and Ellie Stott, Ellie Wilson and D`Arcy Littlefield. Keith Smith`s charges remain five points ahead at the top.

Second placed Edinburgh University were also convincing winners over Hillhead with goals from Georgia Jones, Sophie Hinds, Louise Campbell, Katie Robertson and Amy Brodie.

Wildcats moved up into third spot after a five goal win at Gordonians. The Cats were two up at the interval through Olivia Finch and Rona Stewart, the same players added to their tally after the interval and Becky Bruce completed the scoring in the final quarter.

Grange maintained seventh spot after a narrow 2-1 win at Uddingston, again Heather Croll was on target along with Rachel Shiel while D`Arcy Campbell got Uddingston`s reply.

Glasgow University are only a point behind following their 3-0 win at Inverleith.
