Western and Watsonians are still in pole position in the Premiership race

Western Wildcats confirmed their five point lead over Grange at the top of the men`s Premiership after seeing off Dunfermline Carnegie 8-0 at Auchenhowie. In the meantime Watsonians also held on to top spot with a 4-2 win at Edinburgh University and are still three points ahead of Clydesdale Western in the women`s competition.

There seemed little chance of an upset at Auchenhowie after an Andrew McConnell penalty corner put Western ahead after only five minutes. Thereafter the goals flowed, Rob Harwood fired a reverse stick shot into the roof of the net from the edge of the circle, Fraser Moran buried a penalty corner with a direct shot, and then a fantastic build up move involving Jonny Christie and Fraser Calder set up Harwood to finish off………….and it was 4-0 at the interval.

The second half provided no let up in the goal avalanche, Niall Sommerville made it five from open play, McConnell converted from the spot after a Christie shot was illegally saved on the line by a Dunfermline defender. That was followed by final quarter strikes by Harwood and McConnell for their individual hat-tricks.

Grange kept in touch with Western with a 2-1 win away at Edinburgh University, Pete Caughey and Murray Banks scored for Grange while Hamish Imrie replied for the students.

Clydesdale`s new lease of life continued at Watsonians with a 3-0 win, and they now leapfrog the Edinburgh side into fourth spot, and are now only four points away from Edinburgh University in third. A double from Jack McKenzie and the other from Fraser Hirst were Clydesdale`s scorers.

Hillhead moved up to the same points as Uddingston at the top of the bottom six with a 6-3 win over the Lanarkshire side. Fraser Ward was top scorer with three while Murray Ross, Tom Cole and Graeme Campbell got the others. Uddingston`s replies came from Finn Halliday, a penalty corner by Graeme Haxton and finally Ben Carroll.
Hillhead`s coach Keith Joss remarked: “It was really pleasing performance with multiple players from our 2s stepping up due to covid and injuries.”

Dundee Wanderers came themselves a relegation lifeline by seeing off Kelburne 2-1 at Glasgow Green. The Paisley side opened the scoring but Bobby Ralph levelled by the interval. The winner came from a deflection by Kennedy Gibb after Jack Donaldson had smashed the ball into the circle.

Kelburne are now only two points ahead of Wanderers, so it is getting interesting down there.

Bottom side Grove Menzieshill also picked up a point with a 2-2 draw with Inverleith. The Edinburgh side seemed to have the match sewn up with a two goal lead through Livio Belotti, his eleventh of the season, and Xavax Cordero with a reverse stick shot into the top corner, but the Taysiders were allowed back into the contest and the game finished level.

Inverleith coach Alan Wall said: “We were two up but missed so many chances but they played well late on.”

On Thursday evening Uddingston moved to the top of Division B of the Premiership with a 1-0 win over Kelburne, Graeme Haxton got the only goal of the game.
Watsonians continued their winning run to 15 games with a 4-2 win at third placed Edinburgh University and thereby kept their three point lead over rivals Clydesdale Western – although the latter have a game in hand.

In the first quarter Sarah Jamieson put Watsonians ahead and by the interval they were two up through a penalty corner conversion by Emily Dark.

In the second half Amy Brodie pulled one back for the students but not long after Dark made it 3-1 at another set piece. Watsonians them moved into an unassailable 4-1 advantage through Sarah McKay after Jamieson had created the opening. A diving deflection from Itske Hooftman made it 4-2, but the league leaders were able to see out the remainder of the game for the three points.

Clydesdale Western kept up the pressure with a 5-1 win over GHK, a hat-trick from Fiona Semple was the highlight with Bronwyn Shields and Heather O`Brien getting the others. GHK`s consolation came from Aimee Anderson who took a pass from Zara Kennedy, rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into the net.

A good effort from Hillhead, they went to Auchenhowie and came away with a 2-0 win. Their goals came from Wendy Andrews with a shot from the top of the circle and then Mhairi Low with a reverse sweep from a narrow angle.#

Wildcats` Kaz Cuthbert sportingly said: “Their goalie was very good and they were very organised.”

Glasgow University still hold on to seventh spot in the Premiership despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Dundee Wanderers at Glasgow Green.

Cesca Lang`s brilliant long ball found Lucy Smith who passed it on to Ciara Forgie to slip the ball into the net.for the opener for the students. Wanderers levelled with a penalty corner conversion from Sam Sangster. Another penalty corner puts the Taysiders ahead, this time Sangster slips the ball to Vikki Bunce for a 2-1 lead. But Glasgow finally earned a share of the points with Forgie passing the ball on to Emily Simmers who found the back of the net.

The draw pulled Wanderers further away from the relegation zone but their Tayside rivals Grove made up some ground with a 5-1 win over bottom side Erskine Stewarts Melville. Here there were stow goals each for Flo Mitchell and Lucy Murray with Emma Malcolm getting the other.

In the final game Uddingston continue their recent good progress with a 4-0 away to Gordonians. McKenzie Bell scored twice and the other goals emanated from D`Arcey Campbell and Caterina Neill. Not a good result for the Aberdonians who now slip back to tenth in the table and perilously close to the relegation zone.
