Western and Watsonians still Top

It`s still tight at the top of the Premiership tables but in the men`s, Western have opened up a four-point lead at the top while Watsonians still lead Edinburgh University but by only two goals in the women`s competition.

Grange lost a bit of momentum succumbing to a 3-3 draw at Dunfermline Carnegie, perhaps the Fifers best result since joining the top flight for the first time this season. Towards the end of the game the score stood at 2-2, Carnegie`s AIdan McQuade having scored twice from penalty corners. Then Grange took the lead from the spot but in the final moments Martin Daw levelled for a share of the points.

However, Western took full advantage of Grange`s slip and moved further ahead in the Premiership with a 3-0 win at Watsonians.

After a goalless first half where Western failed to take full advantage of their chances to score, Scott Menzies opened with a back post conversion following a pass from Fraser Moran. The result was sealed with a double by Rob Harwood, the first came from a chipped ball over the keeper to be followed by an option penalty corner routine for a 3-0 win.

Edinburgh University extended their unbeaten run to seven with a 5-3 win over Kelburne at Glasgow Green and moved into second spot. Keir Robb kept up his goal scoring record with a double and captain Robbie Croll, Declan Bradley and Guy Rowson got the others. Kelburne`s replies came from Mikey Nicol, Riyaad Henry and Craig Speirs.

Uddingston and Clydesdale fought out a 1-1 draw. In the first quarter, Andrew Allan opened with a penalty corner strike but just after the interval Gavin Mackenzie levelled from open play.

In the final game, Hillhead moved themselves from the bottom rungs with a 6-3 win over Dundee Wanderers. Fraser Ward scored a hat-trick for the home side, Jimmy Lynch Small got a double and Murray Ross got the other while Callum Ross, Craig Poulson and Frank Mulgrew, at a penalty corner, replied for the Taysiders.

Watsonians retained pole position in the women`s Premiership with a 4-0 win over fourth placed Hillhead. Susan Hamilton and Heather Tait put the Edinburgh side two up, but their lead was only preserved when keeper Lucy Camlin saved from the spot. The Edinburgh side added to their tally in the third quarter through Anni Arthur and Sarah Jamieson for a comfortable four goal win.

Clydesdale Western sit ominously in the wings after seeing off Gordonians 6-0 in Aberdeen. Heather Lang was top scorer with a double while the others came from Annabelle Ballantyne, Fiona Semple, Fran Lonergan and Jenny Eadie.

Other challengers, Edinburgh University, were also clear winners at Erskine SM with a 7-0 victory, there was a double for Amy Brodie while the other goals came from Ava Findlay, Ava Smith, Jess Ross, Georgie Jones and Margery Justice.

Wildcats moved up to fourth place in the table with a 3-0 win over Glasgow University. In the first half, Kate Holmes from a penalty corner and Rona Stewart, whose lofted shot eluded the keeper, put Wildcats two ahead at the interval. In the second half, Sue Campbell put the match to bed with a third.

On Thursday evening Wildcats moved up to fifth place in the table with a 3-1 win at Uddingston. It was 2-1 at the interval, Olivia Finch opened the scoring with a rebound off the keeper and Aspen Cumming added a second at a penalty corner. In between, Darcy Campbell got Uddingston`s reply with a direct strike at a set piece. Alex Stuart sealed the points for Uddingston when she intercepted a ball out of defence, moved into the circle and fired a fierce shot past the keeper. Wildcats had further penalty corner chances to add to their tally, but in the end, there was no further scoring.

GHK retained their top six spot with a 9-1 win over Dundee Wanderers. The scorers came from everywhere, Skye Stuart opened with a couple, then Zara Kennedy, Estelle Macaloney and two from Laura McCabe contributed to a 6-1 half-time lead. In the second half Lucy Williamson at a penalty corner, Susan McGilveray and Kennedy, again, took the total to nine – Sam Sangster at a set piece got the lonely consolation.

Uddingston moved up the ladder with a 2-1 win at Grove. The Taysiders took the lead through a penalty corner conversion from Lucy Murray but, by the interval, Connie Lathe had levelled. The winner for the Lanarkshire side came from a penalty corner which was double blocked, but Sophie Ross was on hand to sweep in the winner.
