Western lose in Germany and a roundup of today’s two Premiership ties

EHL – WESTERN 1 HARVESTEHUDER (GERMANY) 9

Western went into the lion`s den in Hamburg in front of a large and noisy crowd to face EuroHockey League hosts Harvestehuder in a first round tie, but they were largely outplayed and found themselves on the wrong end of a 9-1 defeat. They will now play Spanish side Club Egara tomorrow for EHL ranking points.

Vishal Marwaha`s charges seemed to be in control of proceedings in the early exchanges, and the tournament hosts were reduced to ten players with a yellow card to Xaver Hasun, but then the Germans struck with two goals inside a minute. Firstly, Moritz Frey brilliantly deflected the ball past Gavin Sommerville, and that was quickly followed by a penalty corner strike by 17-year-old Paul Glander for a quick 2-0 which must have knocked some of the stuffing out of the Scots.

Western lived dangerously but survived to the end of the first quarter with no further damage.

Early in the next quarter Callum Duke was dispossessed in his own half, the ball was fed on to Austrian international Michael Korper who scored with ease.

The Scots then had their first scoring opportunities at two penalty corner awards, at the first Andrew McConnell`s flick was charged down, then the ball was switched to Rob Harwood but his effort was well saves by the German keeper.

But before the interval Glander powered home another penalty corner for 4-0.

Early in the third quarter Korper added a fifth when he slid the ball past Sommerville.

At the other end Cameron Moran managed to guide the ball into the net only for the umpire to award a penalty corner. Up stepped McConnell again but his low flick cannoned off a post to safety – that was unlucky.

Glander then scored from open play for his hat-trick for 6-0.

The Scots finally got their consolation, their penalty corner award survived a video referral and Fraser Moran found the net with a low drag flick.

But Harvestehuder were not finished, in the final quarter Korper added two more to bring his personal tally to four, and in the closing minute Frey made it nine.

Meanwhile, in the men`s Premiership newly promoted Monarchs gained their first point of the campaign with a 3-3 draw at Dunfermline Carnegie. There were two goals for Ross Glashan while Callum Boag got the other, Carnegie`s tally came from Andrew Doyle, Josh Love and Gary Clark.

However, in the women’s Premiership newly promoted Inverleith went one better with three points in a 1-0 win at Hillhead – their first win in the top flight. Stephanie Bain was on target with the only goal of the game.
