Western Wildcats still lead the men`s Premiership but Watsonians take over at the top of the women`s

Grange and Western Wildcats fought out a thrilling 4-4 draw at Fettes in the men`s Premiership, and while that still leaves the title race open the latter`s lead at the top remains at five points with six games remaining – so advantage still rests at Auchenhowie.

Meanwhile, at Tipperlinn Watsonians took over at the top of the women`s Premiership with a 3-2 win over Clydesdale Western.

Watsonians moved to the top of the women`s Premiership by three points after a belated 3-2 win over Clydesdale Western.

With 45 seconds left a quick free hit found Sarah Jamieson, the Scotland striker beat two players along the base line and then beat the keeper to give Watsonians a narrow victory and pole position.

In the first half Emma Murray put Clydesdale into the lead but Watsonians were level by the interval when Katherine Holdgate fired home a loose ball off a defender.

After the interval Watsonians went on the counter attack leaving Nikki Stobie to smash the ball home from the top of the circle. But parity was restored when Rosie Tudor directed the ball past the Watsonians keeper.

Then came the all important winner for Watsonians.

Edinburgh University retained third spot with a 2-0 win over Hillhead, Ava Smith and Sophie Hinds were on target.

GHK`s clash with Wildcats ended in a 0-0 draw, but the former`s captain Carly Bisset said: “It was an end to end game with several chances for both teams.

In the lower reaches of the Premiership Dundee Wanderers seem to have pulled themselves well away from the drop zone with a 3-0 win over local rivals Grove Menzieshill who remain transfixed in the relegation play-off spot. Wanderers were two ahead at the interval through Hannah Young and Chloe D`Ambrosio who found the net on her 16th birthday. Young confirmed the three points with another strike in the second half.

Glasgow University take a three point lead at the top of the lower six with a 1-0 win at Uddingston. The winning goal came in the fourth quarter, a free hit by Corrie Hay was passed on to Lucy Smith who forwarded to Georgia Smith to slot into the corner of the net.

Gordonians held on to ninth spot and safety with a 1-0 win at Erskine Stewarts Melville, Heather Howie got the all important goal at a penalty corner.

A mid-week Scottish Cup fixture saw Edinburgh University march into the semi-final draw of the Scottish Cup with a 2-1 win at Uddingston. All the goals came in the final seven minutes with Ava Smith and Amy Brodie scoring for the students and McKenzie Bell replying with a deflection at a penalty corner.

Grange took an early lead through a direct penalty corner strike by Fraser Heigh but within a few minutes Wildcats` Fraser Calder from open play levelled proceedings. Again the Edinburgh side went ahead through an opportunist goal by Alan Johnston at the far post, only for Andrew McConnell to equalise when he fired home a rebound from his own initial penalty corner shot.

Then came a flurry of goals in the third quarter, Grange`s Peter Caughey finished off a breakaway move for a 3-2 lead, Rob Harwood fired home a penalty corner to bring Wildcats back to 3-3, but minutes later Jacob Tweedie restored Grange`s lead when he beat two players in the circle and flicked the ball into the net.

However, with eight minutes remaining a McConnell penalty corner effort was blocked but Jonny Christie reacted quickly to net the rebound for a share of the points.

Perhaps the result of the day was at Titwood where Clydesdale beat third placed Edinburgh University 6-2. It was an interesting series of events, the Dale were four up at the break, Edinburgh scored twice through Keir Robb and Iain McFadden, then took their keeper off to retrieve the game only to lose another couple of goals …and the match.

Clydesdale`s six emanated from a double each for Euan Anderson and Andrew Allan while David Nairn and Jack MacKenzie got the others. The result moves Clydesdale to fifth in the table.

The other top six match between Dunfermline Carnegie and Watsonians ended in a 2-2 draw. Andrew Doyle opened for the Fifers but Watsonians moved into a 2-1 lead through a penalty corner by Danny Cain and open play strike by Owen Hunter. However, parity was restored with a penalty corner conversion by Michael Ross for a share of the points.

3-3 score seemed to be the favourite score on Tayside.

Dundee Wanderers opened the scoring against Hillhead but the Glasgow side retaliated to move into a 3-1 lead through Graeme Campbell and a double by Fraser Ward. But Wanderers came back to life in the final quarter and Ralph scored another couple for his hat-trick and a share of the points.

Hillhead`s Keith Joss admitted: “It was disappointing to concede two late goals.”

Their rivals at the foot of the table Grove Menzieshill also finished with a similar score line against Kelburne, Ciaran Wilcox, Sam Hunt and Craig Spiers were on target for the Paisley side.

The result is that Wanderers are still three points ahead of their rivals Grove Menzieshill in the relegation struggle.

Inverleith ended their recent lean spell with a 2-1 win at Uddingston and go back to the top of the lower six table. Livio Belotti opened with a solo run and finish, and the other goal came from a back post deflection by Tom Barton at a penalty corner.
