Wildcats and GHK extend their lead in the Premiership

International commitments caused the postponement of women Premiership matches involving Watsonians v Wildcats, Hillhead v Edinburgh University and Clydesdale Western v Dundee Wanderers. However, the men`s card was unfortunately reduced by COVID cases, that is Watsonians v Grove Menzieshill and Clydesdale v Grange.

Although the Premiership card was curtailed, Wildcats (men) and GHK (women) won again and consolidated their place at the top of their respective tables.

Wildcats went prowling on Tayside and came away with an 8-3 victory, a result that puts them three points ahead of Grange.

The contest was effectively over by the interval with goals from Callum Duke, Fraser Moran at a penalty corner and a double by Jonny Christie, Cammie Bell replied for the Taysiders for a 4-1 half-time score line.

Although Andy McConnell added a fifth from the spot early in the second half, Wanderers had their best spell in the game with goals from Callum Ross at a penalty corner assisted by Sean Dowie and then Kennedy Gibb following a high ball pass from Ross to bring the score back to 5-3. Wildcats added 3 further goals in the final quarter from Rob Harwood at a penalty corner, Moran again and finally Fraser Calder.

Wildcats` coach Vishal Marwaha said: “I am always happy to get a good win away from home and to score as many goals as we did. We had a good first half and last quarter, but we became rather disjointed in the third quarter.”

Newly promoted Inverleith finally moved up the table with a narrow 3-2 win at Uddingston, their first win in the top flight. In the first half it was Inverleith who took the initiative with goals from Cammie Scott and Kyle Taylor but by the interval the home side pulled one back in open play through Finn Halliday.

The Lanarkshire side levelled through Gavin McKenzie, but just as the game seemed to be heading for a share of the points Ed Iffla gave Inverleith all three points with just two minutes left.

Uddingston`s Director of Hockey Harry Dunlop felt that his side deserved something more from the contest as they missed several chances including the failure to convert from the spot, but his side are still in the bottom rungs of the table.

Edinburgh University also recorded their first victory of the campaign with a 2-1 win over Hillhead. The students were one up at the interval, Costa Stylianou scored with a rebound at a penalty corner. Murray Ross levelled for Hillhead in the second half, but the winner came late on when Declan Bradley tipped in at the back post after a well worked penalty corner routine.

While Hillhead are still waiting for their first point of the campaign, coach Keith Joss said: “I was delighted with the effort the boys put in.”

Carly Bisset, GHK`s captain, recounted that today`s contest against Erskine Stewart`s Melville was extremely frustrating, she recounted that they dominated possession and had plenty of chances to score but were frequently denied by keeper Vicki Hansen who made a string of saves from both penalty corners and open play.

However, the Glasgow side did break through Estelle Macaloney following a goal mouth scramble and then Katie Mackenzie to finish off a great cross from Laura Mccabe for a two goal half-time lead.

GHK added a third after the interval through Skye Stuart following a great cross by Macaloney.

Uddingston finally broke their duck with a 4-1 victory at Gordonians. The Lanarkshire side were three up at the interval through Maddie Bower and penalty corner conversions by Kirsty Wratten and Olivia Mullen. Alice Pridham brought the score back to 3-1 but Uddingston were not to be denied with a final strike by Sophie Ross.

Glasgow University completed their second consecutive victory in the Premiership with a comfortable 4-0 win over Grove. The students opened in nine minutes with a free shot from Emily Simmers, and that is how it stood at the interval.

Glasgow doubled their tally with a penalty corner strike by Rhiannon Carr that went in off a Grove defender. In the final quarter a slap shot across the circle by Catriona Humphery was deflected into the net by Ciara Forge for 3-0. The final goal emanated from an interchange between Forge and Simmers and the latter rounded the keeper to score.
